The Roanoke Regional Writers Conference III is scheduled for January 22 -
23 at Hollins University and features NPR essayist Janis Jaquith of
Charlottesville as its keynote speaker. Among those teaching classes
will be John Anderson, whose new book on working through cancer with
his wife, Stand by Her: A Breast Cancer Guide for Men, which has become something of a national sensation.

There will be a Citizens First meeting on Sunday, January 24, 3:00-4:00 p.m, at the Blacksburg Public Library.
Great Decisions, a community discussion group focusing on foreign policy issues, is now forming in Blacksburg. This annual nationwide, nonpartisan program is prepared by the Foreign Policy Association (New York) and has been offered for the past 56 years. The program is free and open to the public and is being sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Montgomery County, Virginia , again this year. A study guide is available ($16.50) which provides impartial, thought-provoking analyses of 8 issues of concern to U.S. policymakers today. (Also, a copy of the study guide will be on reserve in the Blacksburg Library.) The topics selected for discussion this year are the following:
Town of Blacksburg Public Meeting on Ordinance #1546

The Town of Blacksburg has proposed Ordinance #1546 regarding changes to the powers and duties of the Historic or Design Review Board (HDRB). On December 8, 2009 the Town Council directed further public input be received on the Ordinance. A public input meeting has been scheduled by Town staff to discuss the proposed Ordinance changes and also to clear up misunderstandings about the changes and the existing regulations governing the Historic District. After this public meeting, Town staff will report back to Town Council about the meeting.
