I went to a meet and greet at Bull and Bones last night. Three Town Council candidates were there: Krisha Chachra, Tom Rogers, and Greg Fansler. I had a chance to talk to all three one on one, and I was impressed with their enthusiasm for Blacksburg and their desire to preserve and maintain what makes Blacksburg "a special place" while at the same time having realistic and achievable goals for solving some of Blacksburg's long term problems.
In a lively two hour discussion last night, the nine candidates for Town Council answered a wide range of questions about their views and ideas for the Town of Blacksburg.
The meeting was moderated by Beth Obenshain of the New River Land Trust, and written questions were submitted by the audience. This was a good format, as it kept the questions short and to the point.

As I listen to more and more of the candidates running for Town Council, I become more and more convinced that business is the future of Blacksburg, not the University. And I mean that in a good way, for both Tech and the Town. Blacksburg is a college town, and will always be a college town. Having a nationally ranked football team has been good for Tech and good for the town, including town businesses.
But the university has been struggling with budget cuts for years, and is now looking at another round of 15% budget cuts. Meanwhile, out in the CRC business park, more than 200 businesses employ over 2200 people--in total, more jobs than the entire university. And many of those businesses are fast growing, high tech enterprises that are hiring. read more »
I went to Krisha Chachra's Coffee with the Candidates meeting last night at Easy Chair Coffee Shop. I have spoken with five candidates so far, and Ms Chachra is articulate, energetic, and has more solid ideas that any of the other candidates. She was able to describe and support her ideas in detail, and she believes that Blacksburg has a really bright future ahead, but wants to help ensure that with a focus on continuing to develop a community that is appealing to young professionals, that has a wide variety of office space available, and that has a wide array of affordable housing.
Be at the Easy Chair Coffee Shop at the University Mall this evening if you want to hear from Krisha Chachra about her interest in serving on Town Council.
