I was talked into going to see the movie "The Social Network" last night. Ostensibly about the rise of Facebook, it's hard to know how much of it was based on facts and how much was fantasy. I know that I thought the movie would never end. I can't recall another film in recent memory where every single character was so consistently unlikable. read more »
The Roanoke Regional Writers Conference III is scheduled for January 22 -
23 at Hollins University and features NPR essayist Janis Jaquith of
Charlottesville as its keynote speaker. Among those teaching classes
will be John Anderson, whose new book on working through cancer with
his wife, Stand by Her: A Breast Cancer Guide for Men, which has become something of a national sensation.

The Blacksburg High School Winter Concert is Thursday, December 10, at 7:30 pm in the BHS auditorium. All parents, grandparents, families, and friends are encouraged to attend this annual event. Admission is always free.
Friday 11/6, we are at our usual YMCA Stuart Ballroom location with Jessica and Bryant teaching the 7:30 lesson. 8:30 dancing is to the music you request, or you can bring your own including Swing with a ballroom and Latin variety.
Tonight we are re-"treating" to our old dancing venue across the street from our regular YMCA location. We call it the "Upstairs Ballroom" - it is on the 2nd floor of Dance Tech/Squared Away Storage at 1101 N Main St.
Brian Regan is funny. Mrs. Around and I went to see him last night in Roanoke, and it was an hour and a half of almost nonstop laughing. We have seen his Comedy Central specials and so we knew what to expect, but seeing him in person was really fun. He is not really a "stand up" comic, because he acts out a lot of his material. read more »
The Big Lick Blues Festival will be held in Elmwood Park in Roanoke, with a rain location of the Roanoke Civic Center. Delbert McClinton, Stacy Brooks, the Mo' Hippa Band, and many other artists and groups will be performing, along with lots of food. $26 at the gate, $20 in advance; tickets available at SunTrust banks. read more »
