The blizzard of '94 and '95

Submitted by aroundblacksburg on Sat, 02/06/2010 - 9:08am.

This blizzard of '10 will be one for the record books.  Unless I'm wrong, we have not had this much snow since the winters of '94 and '95.  The Around family survived the blizzard of '94 quite nicely, as we were living the wilds of Craig County.  Our power went out like everyone else's, but I just threw another hickory log into the wood stove and opened a window because the house was too hot.  Water?  Melted it by the gallon on top of the wood stove.  We hardly noticed the lack of electricity.  In Blacksburg, the power was out for days and the water system stopped working because there was not enough generators to keep the water pumps running.  Pipes froze, people got really really cold, and mayhem ensued.

But spending three weeks trapped on the side of a mountain with two toddlers because the road up the mountain had four foot drifts on it was not so much to Mrs. Around's liking, so we packed up that summer and migrated the clan to Blacksburg.  And in '95 we had those awesome back to back snows that dumped three feet of snow on Blacksburg.  The power did not go out, but there was so much snow the snow plows could barely push it out of the roads.  The town was pretty much shut down for a week until things started to melt.
