The Blizzards of '10

We had two feet of drifts half way across the street this morning in our neighborhood.  Someone sent me a news clip from Minnesota where they were claiming they had trouble finding places to put plowed snow, and that the piles of snow were "6 feet high."  Huh.  Buncha pikers up there in Minnesota--we've got snow piles 10 feet high.

Beer is good for you

Great news! Beer helps build strong bones!  It turns out craft made beers (e.g. locally brewed beer, Sam Adams, etc.) are high in silicon, which is essential for strong bones.  And the silicon in beer is easily absorbed by the body.  The ingredients used in the brewing make all the difference.  Cheap beer made with rice and corn has very low levels of silicon, while beers made with hops and barley can have as much as 9 times more bone-building silicon.  So enjoy a beer and build up your bones.

The blizzard of '94 and '95

This blizzard of '10 will be one for the record books.  Unless I'm wrong, we have not had this much snow since the winters of '94 and '95.  The Around family survived the blizzard of '94 quite nicely, as we were living the wilds of Craig County.  Our power went out like everyone else's, but I just threw another hickory log into the wood stove and opened a window because the house was too hot.  Water?  Melted it by the gallon on top of the wood stove.  We hardly noticed the lack of electricity.  In Blacksburg, the power was out for days and the water system stopped working because there was not enough generators to keep the water pumps running.  Pipes froze, people got really really cold, and mayhem ensued.

Punxsutawney Phil: Six more weeks of winter

Bad news, Blacksburgians.  The groundhog has spoken, and we are in for six more weeks of winter.  It happens to be snowing right now, but it is supposed to change into the more typical winter in Blacksburg weather later today:  35 degrees, damp, bone chilling cold, and raining.  read more »

The best of Blacksburg

The New River Current is running its annual Best of the New River Valley survey, and it is time to vote for the best Blacksburg businesses.

Some of my favorites include:

Clean sidewalks downtown

Did some shopping downtown last week, and was pleased to find that more merchants are shoveling the sidewalks in front of their stores.  I did not do an exhaustive analysis, but found that all but a few storefronts had cleaned off the sidewalk.  This is a big improvement over years past, when a majority of businesses did not bother to shovel the walks, the snow would get packed down into solid ice, and then the merchants would complain no one shopped downtown.  If it is a choice between cracking your skull open or breaking a hip from a fall on an ice-covered sidewalk or shopping at the mall, most people will probably choose the mall.

Wendy's has WiFi

Wendy's has free WiFi now--free, and no login required--nice.  Goes well with their delicious bacon burger, which is the best bacon burger in town, I think.  They do not scrimp on the bacon;  four nice thick slices so there is crispy bacon flavor in every bite.

Blacksburg Christmas Parade is online

If you missed the Blacksburg Christmas parade, WTOB has put a nice video online.

The parade was really good this year; lots of floats, lots of great classic cars, and a lot of horses!  And the music was outstanding--the Blacksburg High School marching band, under the direction of Mr. Darrell Pearman, has been terrific this year, and earned another "Superior" rating this fall.  The BHS band is on the way to a record breaking twentieth year of being ranked "Superior" overall.

ODB: Serious deliciousness

If you have not stopped by Our Daily Bread (ODB) lately, you should.  The new owners have added some serious deliciousness to the old favorites.  The pastry cases are just bursting with all kinds of French pastry, new kinds of cookies, cakes, pies, and tarts.  And the breakfast sandwiches are good too, especially if you are tired of the same old egg biscuits that all the fast food places sell.

Hokkaido Buffet: Two thumbs up!

Well, we hit the new Hokkaido Buffet for lunch today.  It was the first time I had been there since it opened.  The first surprise was the new floor plan.  There is nothing left from the old El Guadeloupe interior--they gutted the place.

The new decor looks great--bright, wide open, clean, and upscale.  And the food was terrific.  We all got the Mongolian barbecue, and everything was fresh and delicious.  If you are not familiar with Mongolian barbecue, you pick your own ingredients (meat, vegetables, and sauce) and they cook it up on the spot.

Dead coyote in the middle of the road

With apologies to Warren Zevon, the coyote was not actually in the middle of the road.  The dead animal was next to trail on the way to Kelley's Knob.  Sunday was a beautiful day for a hike, and a reminder that fall really is the best season in the southern Appalachians--bright blue skies, that thin, late fall sun, and warm temperatures.

The coyote was recently dead, perhaps within the last twenty-four hours.  I was not up for poking it much, as one of the possibilities is that it died from rabies, but I'm more inclined to think it might have been shot, although there was no signs of a gunshot wound on the side of the body that was visible.  The coyotes attack sheep, and so there are more than a few farmers who don't care much for them.

Blacksburg Wants to hear from Bikers

The Town of Blacksburg is seeking public input to identify opportunities for designation of town-wide contiguous bike routes. These routes will provide cyclists with the ability to make short trips, commute to work and school, and run utilitarian errands around town.  read more »

Just for fun--or for biology class

I'm pretty sure there are some teachers at Blacksburg High School who would make this part of their lecture.

Note:  you have to move the slider at the bottom--keep going all the way to the right.

Blacksburg's Second Economy

I had a conversation on Tuesday with a key leader in Blacksburg who was unaware of Blacksburg's second economy--the professional and technical businesses in Blacksburg.  Many of those businesses are located in the Virginia Tech Corporate Research Center, and here's the key fact that has not been discussed much by some of the candidates running for Blacksburg's Town Council:  There are more people working in the CRC  than are faculty and staff employed at Virginia Tech.

Great ideas for Halloween

Haunt Project is a great site if you are looking for ideas for costumes for Halloween or if you need some good ideas on how to scare the neighbor kids when they come calling on Halloween night.

I am still scarred from the freaky family that lived up the street from us.  I think it was probably fifth grade.  I was out collecting Halloween candy with a few friends, and we were about two blocks from home, but still in the same neighborhood.  But it was far enough away that we did not really know who lived in the houses.  Se we walk up to this one house and start ringing the doorbell.  read more »

A Vision for Blacksburg: A Walkable Community

I went to a meet and greet at Bull and Bones last night.  Three Town Council candidates were there:  Krisha Chachra, Tom Rogers, and Greg Fansler.  I had a chance to talk to all three one on one, and I was impressed with their enthusiasm for Blacksburg and their desire to preserve and maintain what makes Blacksburg  "a special place" while at the same time having realistic and achievable goals for solving some of Blacksburg's long term problems.

Light the Fire 5K Race is tomorrow

The Light the Fire 5K is tomorrow, and you can register tonight (Friday) at St. Mary's Church from 5 to 8 PM.  On race day (Saturday) you can register at the Weight Club at the CRC, starting at 6:30 AM.  There is both a 5K race and a 1K fun run, so anyone can participate.  There are lots of door prizes for participants.

Town Council Candidates--Sustainability Week Meeting Report

In a lively two hour discussion last night, the nine candidates for Town Council answered a wide range of questions about their views and ideas for the Town of Blacksburg.

The meeting was moderated by Beth Obenshain of the New River Land Trust, and written questions were submitted by the audience. This was a good format, as it kept the questions short and to the point.  read more »
